A free meal planning app without a subscription
Madmakker is free, the whole app. No trial period, no subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads and no account. There is no paid edition with the good features held back: the weekly plan, the shopping list, 212 recipes, household sharing and the reminders are all there the first time you open it. It is available for Android 7.0 and later, and its interface is in Danish.
Why can it be free?
Because there are no investors and no sales department that needs to make money from you. Madmakker is made by one person in Denmark, Nixio, and the app has no servers worth mentioning, because almost everything happens on your own phone.
It is worth being sceptical about free apps, because most of them are free for a reason. The usual model is ads, data collection, or a free edition made just awkward enough that you pay your way out. None of that applies here, and it can be checked: there are no analytics and no tracking in the app, and the privacy policy says exactly what leaves the phone — a price index containing nothing about you, and your weekly plan, if you switch sharing on yourself.
What you get without paying
You get all of it: the week's lunches and dinners laid out for you, a shopping list sorted by your shop's order, 212 Danish recipes with a focus mode and a timer, sharing between two phones, defrosting reminders, a widget showing today's dinner, and an optional layer with points and 96 achievements that can be switched off entirely.
- No account. There is no email to give and no password to invent, not even for sharing with the person you live with.
- No ads. No banners, no videos and no »watch an ad to unlock«.
- No in-app purchases. Points cannot be bought with money. You earn them or you do not.
- Works offline. Everything except household sharing works in flight mode and in a shop with no signal.
What do the others cost?
Of the Danish meal planning services, Valdemarsro is the most expensive and the most indulgent (a subscription, advertised at 39 kr. a month or 199 kr. a year in August 2026). Nem Madplan and madplan.ai are free to start with a paid edition on top. Madplan Online and Madmakker cost nothing.
That does not mean free is always the right choice. If you pay for Valdemarsro, you get a universe of recipes that Madmakker does not have. The differences sit side by side in the comparison of Danish meal planning apps, including the cases where you should choose one of the others.
Questions
Is Madmakker completely free?
Yes. The whole app is free: no trial period, no subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads. There is no paid edition with more features.
Does it need a credit card or an account?
No. There is no account, no login and no payment information involved. You install the app from Google Play and start.
Is there a free meal planning app for iPhone?
Not from Nixio. Madmakker exists only for Android. Among the Danish alternatives, Madplan Online is free in the browser, and Nem Madplan is free to start on iPhone.
Free, but is it usable if I do not read Danish?
That is the honest catch. The interface, the recipes and the shopping list categories are Danish, and the prices are Danish supermarket prices in kroner. An English version is planned, but it is not here yet. Nothing is lost by trying, since the app costs nothing and needs no account.
